The world of e-cigs has grown so big in the last few years, that trying to get started is confusing as hell. Not only that, it can be expensive-and if you're not careful, you can get seriously ripped off. Since I have had so much success with e-cigs personally-it has been over a year since I have smoked a real cigarette-I just hate the thought of somebody getting suckered into one of the dozens (maybe dozens of dozens) of scams out there, so I'm going to give you a few tips, a little advice, and drop a few names of trusted products, online vendors, and some fantastic reviewers on YouTube that have really guided me and give seriously sage advice and honest, no B.S. reviews on products.
Let's get started. First thing's first. What exactly is an e-cigarette? Basically, all it is is a battery unit that heats up a coil, which in turn heats up a liquid substance (known throughout the scene as e-liquid), turns it into vapor, which you inhale like you would a normal cigarette. These e-cigarettes come in an overwhelmingly vast variety of size, shape, color, price, etc. Some of them are designed to look like a cigarette, some are box shaped, some are tube shaped and about the size of a MagLite... and some of them are even bigger. It's a huge world of technology, and every day it gets bigger and more advanced in ways that I have yet to understand myself.
So where do you begin? First, let me answer some questions that you may be asking yourself:
1. What the hell is in this "e-liquid"?
E-liquid is made up of just a few simple ingredients-Propyline Glycol, Vegetable Glycerine, Flavoring, and usually, nicotine.
2. That sounds like poison! Is this stuff safe?
The short answer is yes, it's safe. Propyline Glycol is a commonly used chemical-you probably ingest it every day. It's in your toothpaste, your lipstick, a lot of the food you eat, and even your medication in some cases. It's the stuff that makes the fog effect in theater productions, and it's been FDA approved for years. However, the jury is still out on whether e-cigarettes are harmful in the long run, since they've only been out in the world for 10 or so years. Personally, I believe that inhaling the 3-5 ingredients in e-liquid can't possibly be any more damaging than the over 4000 chemicals that are produced when a cigarette is lit. Aside from the chemical reaction made by lighting a cigarette and inhaling it into your lungs...dude, it's f'ng SMOKE!
We all choose our vices in this world. You will have to decide for yourself what you put into your body by choice. I choose to go with e-liquid over cigarette smoke for my own reasons, and if you have yours and decide to give it a shot, then welcome to the party!
So, here's my suggestion for a beginner. Just go to your local 7-11 and pick up a disposable NJOY KING. It will cost you about 7 or 8 bucks, and one of them will give you about 150-200 puffs worth of e-cig experience before it dies, and you can chuck it. If you go to the website (linked above for your convenience), they are offering to send you one for free-just pay the $2.99 postage fee, and you'll get it in the mail in a few days. NJOY is a decent company, and I'd say they have one of the better disposable e-cigs on the market. Again, this is merely a STARTING POINT-just to see if it's something you're interested in, and whether it will actually work for you.
I'm sure you've seen the TV commercial for BLU E-Cigs with Stephen Dorf, and they do make decent disposables. However, please don't get suckered into buying a kit just yet. Try the disposables first. Make sure you really want to make the leap from "analog" cigarettes to e-cigs. It may take a little bit of getting used to, but the benefit of a disposable is that if you don't like it, you've only spent a few bucks to figure it out. The form factor will be familiar to you, since they are designed to look and feel like a real cigarette (especially the NJOY King). From there, we'll move on to more interesting and fun things, like rechargeable batteries, juices (they come in every flavor imaginable...seriously).
First thing's first, though. Let's get you started. Please feel free to email me with any questions at vaperunknown@gmail.com or leave a comment below.
